Marias by Michael Freimuth

Maria’s Packaged Goods & Community Bar has been operating in Bridgeport since 1986 as a classic slashy—half liquor store, half neighborhood tavern. Formerly known as Kaplan’s Liquors in homage to the original owners who founded it in 1939, the bar has long been called by its owner’s name, Mrs. Maria Marszewski. Besides a comprehensive identity for the bar that includes an exhaustive craft beer menu, a set of packaging and beer labels was created as Maria’s begins production on their very own neighboring brewery.

“Since Germany is the third largest exporter of beer and typography Akzidenz-Grotesk comes from Berlin, I decided to create a beer in honor of one of the greatest and most influential typographies in history. I played with the different types of weights and widths and with the amount of alcohol in each beer. Each variation of typography represents a different level of alcohol. As a result we have five types of beers, light, medium, bold, extra and super.”

My name is João Andrade and i´m a graduated communication designer based on Lisbon, Portugal. One can describe my design work as clear and aesthetic, but as well touching and sensible. My main focus is branding, corporate identity, editorial design, photography, typography and want to take up challenges in new areas.
